Our Vision

An involved community that peacefully resolves differences and fosters understanding.

Our Mission

To be the primary community resource that provides dispute resolution services and education in Southwest Washington, to partner with organizations that share our vision, and to build connections, restorative relationships, and understanding.

Our History

In 1992, the City of Vancouver established the Neighborhood Mediation program to assist residents of Vancouver to deal with disputes within their neighborhood.  In 1995, Clark County opened the Dispute Resolution Center, a mediation program for County residents.  Two years later, the programs merged and became Community Mediation Services (CMS), serving all County residents and focusing primarily on Neighbor-Neighbor conflicts.  Over the next few years, CMS developed partnerships with the Vancouver Police Department, Clark County Juvenile Court and Small Claims Court, and Vancouver Schools to establish additional programs such as the Victim Offender Mediation Program and Peer Mediation.

Due to budget cuts within the City of Vancouver, the CMS program was eliminated in 2010.  During 2010, a group of Community Volunteers worked to create a new non-profit Community Mediation Services and to transition the government based program to a community based program.  On October 4, 2010 the new non-profit Community Mediation Services was incorporated.
